On the 31st of May, Iban Ifiok Foundation, hosted a successful 2025 World Menstrual Hygiene Day event, bringing together young girls from diverse backgrounds to celebrate and discuss menstrual health. This year's theme, "Together for a #PeriodFriendlyworld" resonated deeply with the participants, and the conversations that ensued were both enlightening and empowering.
The Significance of World Menstrual Hygiene Day
World Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 28th, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene. The day aims to break the silence surrounding menstruation, challenge stigmas, and promote education and access to menstrual products. By doing so, we can work towards creating a world where menstruation is no longer a barrier to girls' and women's education, health, and overall well-being.
Lessons Learned and Insights Shared
This year's event was designed to be interactive and engaging, with our queens (the young girls) participating in discussions, workshops, and activities that focused on menstrual health, hygiene, and advocacy. Through these sessions, the girls learned valuable lessons that will stay with them for a lifetime.
Some of the key takeaways from the event include:
- Menstruation is a natural part of life: The girls learned that menstruation is a normal biological process that every girl and woman experiences. By understanding this, they can better navigate the physical and emotional changes that come with menstruation.
- Importance of menstrual hygiene: The participants understood the significance of maintaining good menstrual hygiene practices, such as using clean and sanitary products, changing them regularly, and disposing of them properly.
- Breaking the silence: The girls were encouraged to speak openly about menstruation, challenging the stigmas and taboos that often surround the topic. By doing so, they can help create a more supportive and inclusive environment for themselves and others.
- Advocacy and empowerment: The event empowered young girls to become advocates for menstrual health and hygiene in their communities. They learned how to promote awareness, challenge myths, and support their peers in managing menstruation with confidence and dignity.
A Step towards a #PeriodFriendlyWorld
The 2025 World Menstrual Hygiene Day event, organized by the Iban Ifiok Foundation, was a resounding success, thanks to the enthusiasm and participation of the young girls. As we move forward, we are committed to continuing our efforts to promote menstrual health and hygiene, challenge stigmas, and empower girls and women to take control of their bodies and lives.
Together, we can create a world where menstruation is no longer a source of shame or stigma, but a natural part of life that is celebrated and supported. The Iban Ifiok Foundation remains dedicated to this cause, and we look forward to continuing our work towards a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.
